South Bay Water Reclamation Plant
San Diego, CA
DESCRIPTION:
Landscape architectural services for a 28 acre Water Reclamation Facility. The design included the development of landscape construction documents for all exterior areas including walkways, ADA access, parking lots, patios and plazas, demonstration gardens and tour route. Design phase included coordination of the public art component in the landscape and overview of the monument sign design.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The project was developed to showcase the use of reclaimed water. A wide variety of plants were selected for the demonstration garden. Plants were chosen for their tolerance to salts and boron and their ability to survive after establishment with limited water. For establishment purposes, shrubs were irrigated with below grade drip systems. The lawn areas were minimized and irrigated with permanent spray/gear drive systems. Trees are irrigated with a permanent below grade bubbler system.
CHALLENGES:
The major challenge was pinning down the public art component for the project. Once the fencing, vortex fountain and hieroglyphics on the electrical substations along the tour route were identified, the landscape construction documents were developed and successfully completed.
