Camp Pendleton, CA

DESCRIPTION:

Garbini & Garbini provided a low maintenance, drought tolerant landscape for the new Marksmanship Training Facility at Camp Pendleton. The design includes a meandering bioswale to infiltrate storm water, street and parking lot trees for shading paved surfaces, swaths of inorganic mulches to minimize the area of plant material requiring ongoing maintenance, and bands of native plantings with boulders to naturalize and enhance the bioswale and streetscape. Areas for seating, exercising, and marching in formation were also provided.

In keeping with force protection requirements, all landscape materials and planting with a height over 6 inches were kept a minimum distance of thirty-three feet from the buildings. Plant material were selected to survive on natural rainfall after a one year establishment period. A native plant palette was developed and indigenous species with high drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements were selected. The ultimate goal is to minimize maintenance costs while providing a high level of aesthetics, shade and storm water mitigation for the long term.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The landscape features California native plant material, decorative stone surfacing with intermittent boulders, colored concrete paving to match the stone surfacing and a highly efficient bubbler irrigation system. The project will soon be certified LEED Platinum.
